My story…
A few months ago I realised that as a musician my most valuable musical tool is my ear. I’d been playing the guitar for almost 15 years, but I still couldn’t name most notes or chords by ear. I had a pretty good sense of relative pitch, but I was a long way off from ever achieving prefect pitch. That was until I decided to finally train my ears the right way with the pure pitch method. It only took me a few sessions to really notice how much I was improving, but after the first week I could identify several notes by ear and I was even able to name a couple of chords!   

Some people say that you can’t learn perfect pitch…
No-one is simply born with perfect pitch, instead it is a skill that is developed. Courses such as the pure pitch method can teach you how to develop the skill in less than 6-weeks.

Please note: The pure pitch method won’t instantly make you a better musician, instead it simply promises that with a little hard work you’ll have perfect pitch in just 6-weeks. I put a lot of hard work into the course and in addition to achieving perfect pitch I also gained heaps of musical knowledge and saw a vast improvement in my musical ability, after just a few weeks. I’ve been playing the guitar now for almost 15 years. Although I am a very proficient player, it’s always felt like something was missing. I can read and write music and have a pretty good understanding of music theory, but there is one skill I had never been able to master…perfect pitch.    

What you can expect from most courses…
Unfortunately, I forked out quite a lot of cash on courses that ended up being absolutely useless.  One of the courses I purchased came on a bunch of CDs (very expensive) with no accompanying literature. I found the course difficult to follow and the exercises were extremely repetitive and dull - I gave up within a week.

What the pure pitch method offers…
About a month ago a musician told me about a new course he had recently used called the pure pitch method. He was raving about how easy the pure pitch method is to use and understand, and just how engaging it is. I was a little sceptical after I failed so miserably in my previous perfect pitch attempts. I gave in and decided to download it and give it a try. That was less than 6 weeks ago, and yes, you’ve guessed it… I’ve finally managed to achieve perfect pitch. It took me a while, but boy has it been worth it.

Have you noticed that some guitarists can identify and tune their guitar to E without a tuner and that piano players can almost always identify middle c by ear? Well, that is basically the beginning of perfect pitch. If most musicians can name one note by ear, then learning the other 12 notes isn’t going to be to much of a task is it? If you find that you can often pick out chords, identify single notes or work out the intervals between two notes then you’re already well on your way to developing perfect pitch! Remember - we all have perfect pitch, but we just need to know how to unlock it. The pure pitch method could be the key that unlocks your musical potential.

If you’re reading this, you’re probably in a very similar situation to me. You can play an instrument pretty well, but you feel like your ears often let you down. Like you, I finally decided enough was enough and I got myself some perfect pitch tuition – the pure pitch method.

Will the Pure Pitch Method work for me? The great thing about the pure pitch method is that you don’t even have to be a musician to use it. Many of the ear training courses that are currently available rely on prior music theory knowledge, but with pure pitch all you need is a little determination and enthusiasm and you will achieve perfect pitch in no time at all.

Will it make me a better musician?
Using the pure pitch method won’t automatically make you a better musician, but it will give you skills that will make it much easier to improve as a musician. You’ll still have to practice, but you’ll notice that your playing comes on in leaps and bounds.

What are the benefits?
Imagine if you could just pick up your instrument and play exactly what you heard in your head  without even thinking about it! How would you like to be able to listen to a passage of music and then be able to play it back parrot fashion? With the pure pitch method you could.

Are there any negatives?
There are only two things I would change about the pure pitch method. Firstly, I would have preferred it if the course came with an accompanying booklet. I don’t have the printer at the moment and I don’t enjoy reading from my computer screen. Secondly, as a musician who can read and write music I would have liked some of the exercises to have been notated.

What is perfect pitch?
Basically, perfect pitch, which is also known as absolute pitch is the ability to recognise the pitch of  any tone. Here’s a quick example – someone with perfect pitch would be able to name any musical note by ear. If I played a D chord on my guitar, someone with perfect pitch could tell me it was a D chord without looking – pretty cool huh? One of the quickest and easiest ways to achieve perfect pitch is to use the pure pitch method.

I’ve been studying the pure pitch method for just over a month and the progress I’ve made so far is nothing short of shocking. I can’t name all 12 notes every single time yet, but I’ve been able to impress my friend and band mates by naming random notes and chords, which is pretty cool and it still surprises me how quickly I can do it.     

Unfortunately there are downsides to the pure pitch method. It doesn’t come on a CD to start with and as I don’t have a printer I have to study the pure pitch method on my computer screen, which I don’t like. Also, I have a good understanding of music theory, but the course is geared towards people that don’t – maybe it would have been nice for some of the lesson to relate it to music theory – but maybe that’s just me.

Many musicians claim that they were born with perfect pitch and that it’s a skill that can’t be learned. Ryan Cameron (Pure Pitch Method) argues that perfect pitch “can be taught to anyone regardless of their age and genetics” with his training kit. Did you know that the world famous virtuoso guitarist Steve Vai taught himself perfect pitch whilst he was at music college? If he can do it alone, then maybe you can too?

The quickest way to get perfect pitch…

Perfect pitch explained…
Okay, lets start by by explaining what perfect pitch actually is. Basically - perfect pitch is when the listener has the ability to recognise notes and chords just by ear.  

Can you really learn perfect pitch?
Don’t worry - there’s no special musical gene that some musicians have and some musicians don’t. No musicians are ever born with perfect pitch – instead it’s something that’s simply developed over time. Some musicians seem to develop the skill themselves naturally, whist others find that the only way to achieve it is by using a course like the pure pitch method.

Is it hard to achieve perfect pitch? 
Do you remember when you started to learn your instrument? I bet you thought it was impossible at first and that you were never going to be able to get it.
